In fact, some gardeners grow their catnip under an overturned wire hanging basket to protect the crown from devastation. This perennial herb is hardy to zone 3 and thrives in a wide range of soil pH. It is rich in essential oils, giving it a mint-like fragrance. Catnip is a vigorous grower, so keep it well mannered by growing it in dry, lean soil. It is drought tolerant and deer resistant and makes a beautiful addition to perennial borders and mixed beds.
